Our homes today are filled with technology. Smart homes allow homeowners to turn lights on and off, set temperatures, view live video inside and outside, control entertainment devices and a host of other things all remotely with a smartphone or computer. The smart home begins to learn your habits to better serve and market to the homeowner.
Even if your home isn’t a smart home it may still be covered with devices to entertain and bring ease and comfort. Mentally go through each room in your house and consider what room is best for you and your family to be with God. Most families don’t have a room that is ideal for meeting with God. If you were to design a room what would you include or not include in it? We don’t give much thought to questions like this when we begin building, designing or decorating our homes. We think of the most basic functions, eating, sleeping, cleaning, entertaining and hosting. Well, I think we need to reconsider that last one, hosting.
Christian hospitality creates a space for others, ourselves and God to be together. I would challenge you to create a space that will lend itself well to Christian hospitality. In the decorating is there symbolism that points to God? In the layout is there space for people to talk and pray? Is there a handy place for writing down an important thought or prayer and is there paper and pens for that? Each person and family connect with God in a unique manner but there are some very common methods that most Christians default to. Make a list of the ways your family connects with God and then create a space in your home for those things to happen well! As your family grows this space should change to best serve your family!
